What The Hell?

When Spencer saw that his sister was no longer in the back yard of the adobe house, he had to fight the urge to panic. “Figures, leave the ten year old kid to fight all the zombies on his own,” he grumbled under his breath.

One of the many things that made life more difficult during the zombie apocalypse, was when one got separated, you couldn’t call out. The person might hear you, but so would a few hundred zombies. So, biting on his lower lip, he drew his pistol, and crept over to the edge of the wall that separated the upscale home from an avenue of desert.

Undead still moved toward the last place they heard shooting in twos and threes. Why would she have left me? It makes no flipping sense

He was about to climb the wall and take his chances when he heard, “psst, hey Spence, up here.”

Looking back, he saw Emily hadn’t left him at all, but had instead climbed onto the roof of the house. “Damn it, Em, you scared the shit out of me.”

“Shh, quiet down. You know I would never leave you.”

Gazing back over the cactus, Spencer mumbled, “I wish dad could say the same thing.”

She hopped down. “That’s just it, he wouldn’t. Something doesn’t make sense. I think it is going to be up to us to rescue him.” She pointed to the northwest. “The zombs seem to be stumbling in that direction. So I think that’s where we need to go.”

“Great I always love showing up for the big zombie party.”

“That’s just it, I don’t think we should just bolt straight into whatever huge mess is out there.”

“So what, you have another plan?”

She must have been regaining some of her strength after Jewels’ death, for she gave him a half-grin. “Yep. What do we have going for us? We are young, small, and quick. I say we splint up and come to the center of the action in a loop.” She stretched a heart shape on the ground. “We are here at the bottom, be both overshot the place and then loop back.”

“Leave it to a girl to have a heart shaped plan, but should we really be splitting up?”

Desert, Tucson

“Strangely, I think it would be the safest, certainly a lot safer than two kids getting all Rambo and trying to fight our way in there with limited ammo.”

His gut churned. He was already separated from his father and had lost Jewels. He wasn’t sure this was-

His thoughts were interrupted by an explosion of gunfire. It started quickly and showed no signs of letting up.

Emily looked at him wide-eyed. “That’s a lot more than two shooters.”

“Maybe that snipper got reinforcements. Dad’s in big trouble.”

“We gotta go!” She said.

“Stick to the plan?”

“Yeah, stick to the plan.” She moved closer to the wall. “Let’s go rescue dad!”

They don’t call me Spike for nothing

January 23, 2015 at 12:30 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , , , )

Spencer was forced to holster one of his pistols as he scrambled up the far side of the rocky wash. Looking back at his sister almost cost him an eye, when he turned his face toward a jumping Cholla. He jerked back just as the first zombies descended down the hill behind them. So far his idea was working, for several of the undead lost their footing and tumbled down the incline. Most hit cactus along the way and each roll made them fouler than before.

But what worried him more was his sister. She followed him, but since the death of Jewels, she’d been on autopilot at best. He paused to grab her hand and help her up the far side of the wash. Her eyes met his for a moment, but then looked away.

More shots rang out. “Come on, we have to help, dad.”

Once Emily gained the ridge, she spoke for the first time, since Jewel’s death. “This firefight doesn’t make sense. Why are they still both firing? Usually gun fights don’t last this long these days. Either a bullet ends it, people run out of rounds, or they become covered with zombies.”

“Well, if people are shooting, that means dad’s still alive, so let’s go.”

Leaving most of the thirty undead following them far behind, the siblings half-jogged over the rugged terrain. They came to a series of homes and Spencer was about to jump over a wall, when Emily just opened the gate into the luxurious house’s back yard. They hurried to the other side of the fence and stopped for a moment to catch their breath.

The backs of the houses faced a wide avenue of thick cactus. Several zombies could be seen, but they all had their backs to the siblings as the lumbered toward the sounds of gunfire.

Spencer was about to speak when a growl interrupted him. From out of the back of the house an elderly couple stumbled toward them. Emily started to raise her rifle, but Spencer put his hand over it. “Let’s try to not let anyone or anything know we’re coming. Besides, they don’t call me Spike for nothing.”

“No one calls you Spike.”

Ignoring her, he grabbed a green garden post from where it leaned against the wall and charged the male zombie. He lived up to his nick-name when the spike of the post went through the man’s eye. It struggled for a moment, but that only drove it in deeper. Then, like a light switch being flicked, it just collapsed without warning. This tore the post from Spencer’s hands and left him weaponless in the face of the oncoming female walker.

Dancing to the side, he tossed a lawn chair between them. She hit it and toppled forward. Grabbing up a heavy ceramic pot, he said, “You must have liked plants a lot, but this plant is dead, just like you, so you can have it back.” It went down and so did she and neither got back up.

Feeling a bit pleased with himself, he shot a look over at her sister and froze. She wasn’t there!

Spencer The Final Death Dispenser

January 9, 2015 at 12:18 pm (Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , , )

Being a ten year old boy, who weighted less than a hundred pounds, during the eternal aftermath wasn’t east. Add to this, a missing father who was last seen trading bullets with a masked gunman, having to shoot down your adopted mother, and the final slice of heaven was having his older sister lose it after she had done the deed.

Spencer

“Em, come on! We need to move it. There must be thirty zombs on our tale.” She moved after him, but barely faster than a zombie herself. With her shuffling feet and emotionless face she almost looked like one herself.

“Ergg,” he mumbled to himself while he adjusted the heavy rifle he had taken from Jewels’ body. He also had two pistols, his and Jewels. He knew his sister’s magazines were empty, but in her current state he couldn’t be counting on her loading them any time soon.

“It’s just so sad,” she breathed from behind him.

He looked back and saw her face crack into a grimace of agony and the tears broke lose. Worse than this, she stopped walking. As if sensing her vulnerably, the undead moaned louder as they stumbled through the cactus toward them.

“Son of a gun barrel,” Spencer half-cursed as he reached Emily. Spencer dropped Jewels’ rifle in front of his sister. She’s better with a rifle anyway, if she can just snap out of this. Rushing past her toward the approaching zombies, he drew his pistol. “If dad was up here, he’d say it was time to start weeding these goons out.”

Zombies after you

His first two shots went wild, so he forced himself to calm down. This wasn’t easy with growling undead crashing toward him with faces studded with cactus thorns and grey gums quivered as their jaws snapped open and closed. He aimed at the center of the closest one’s head, steadied his pistol, and shot. It went down in a splatter of black and grey. Two more dropped before his magazine emptied. He quickly drew Jewels’ pistol and dropped three more before they grew too close.

He started to backpedal, but his ankle hit and rock and he tumbled back onto his butt.

Emily screamed something that would be forever lost and snatched up Jewels’ fallen rifle. Seconds later, his sister did what she did best and laid into the mob until her magazine went dead.

Spencer shot one in the head that had made it through her onslaught and leapt to his feet. He reached her just in time to see the rifle fall through her fingers and clatter onto the rocks. “Leave it, we still have yours, we’ll come back and get it after we find dad.”

Looking back he saw they had maybe cut down half of the group that followed them, but more moaning could be heard further down the rocky hills. Gunfire drew them every time.

Zombie Night

Somehow, he got his sister moving again and he tried to lead her west and down into a dry wash he saw below them. “Look,” he said more to himself than her. “There is like a ten foot drop of on both sides of the wash. If we can scramble down there some could break their legs trying to follow us and they’ll be even more hard pressed to climb the other side.”

He was just beginning to feel some glimmer of hope when gunfire echoed from the south.

“Oh no, dad!”

The Climax of See Emily Slay

January 3, 2015 at 12:08 pm (Uncategorized)

A wet growl sounded as the reanimated body of Jewels staggered at Spencer from behind. Emily looked on in horror as the woman she had just begun to consider her second mother grabbed a handful of her brother’s hair.

Spencer let out a yell as she pulled him and he fell over onto his back. He struggled against the undead, but she had twice the ten-year-old’s mass. She let out a hiss and dragged him closer to her snapping jaws.

Emily clutched her rifle in a white knuckled grip, but knew she hadn’t had the time to reload any of her spent magazines. Acting on instinct, she ran up and hit what had once been Jewels in the face. It sickened her to know she had just broken the woman she had grown to love’s nose, but she had to save her brother.

Emily

She hit Jewels in the face again, but her blows had little effect. They only stunned the fresh zombie for a few seconds and each time it would go in at Spencer again. If this wasn’t torture enough, Emily heard the sounds of the larger group of undead they had fled from drawing closer.

Emily’s terror was reaching a new level, when Spencer drew a big knife off his belt. But instead of stabbing at Jewels, he used the blade to saw through the hair that held him restrained. With a yell, he cut through enough to allow himself to pull away and Emily saw that several of Jewel’s’ fingers hung by torn muscles and little else.

Emily backpedaled a few feet and yelled, “Eyes on me, Jewels.” Her hand fumbled in her pocket until she found a bullet. “Spence, I have to put her down. We can’t leave her like this.”

“Okay, Em, but hurry. I can see at least twenty more behind you now!”

Her single bullet went into the rifle. She passed only long enough to wipe her building tears away, choke back her crying, and then she sent the shot through Jewels’ head.

Emily's got a gun

After shooting the closest thing she had to a mother for the last year, Emily broke down in tears. Her knees gave out and she fell to the ground. Spencer screamed at her, but she failed to make out the words. Her reality swam in milky circles and she couldn’t bring herself to move, to care, to want to live.

There was only one thing Spencer could have said to get her onto her feet. “Come on, Emily, what about dad?”

Finding her motivation, if not he resolve, Emily struggled to her feet mere moments before the growing group of undead reached them.

It was now Spencer who took the lead. After grabbed up Jewel’s weapons, her little brother grabbed her hand and yanked her along. “Come on, Em. Dad’s still out there and all alone. He’s counting on us. We need to find him.”
Return next Saturday as a new chapter begins and we see the world through Spencer’s point of view as the siblings race to rescue their father!
