The Climax of Sheriff Dells’ Battle

June 20, 2015 at 11:40 am (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

With Ned shot, and being devoured by the ravenous dead, Sheriff Dells get his feet under him. He measured the distance between the roof he stood on and the roof of the building where the last marauder, Temple, held Becca. It looked too long for any sane man to attempt, but he was already running.

He dropped his empty rifle along the way and drew a final breath before he launched himself into space. As soon as he had taken air, he realized it was too far. Below him a dozen zombies growled and gnashed their filthy teeth.

View from the Roof

View from the Roof

He struggled, but his feet missed the edge by a foot. He started to fall. Hands reached out and fingers grasped. Like a zombie crawling at his victim, Dells fought for a hold Somehow his fingers grabbed a pipe angling out from the roof and he brought his descent to a halt. For a moment he just hung there breathing and the undead below him went berserk.

Three bullets passed through the building. The last singed his hair as it passed. In a mad scramble, he hurried to climb into the roof. With a growl, he rolled up and onto the roof. His shoulder hit the hot shingles and he just kept rolling. A big shotgun blast blew through part of the roof where he’d just been.

Three Red Zombies

Dells was just thinking that the huge hole might end up being his enemy’s undoing when he heard a shattering of glass below. A second later he heard Henry laughing. The laughter proved short lived and was replaced by a loud grunt, but it had bought Dells some seconds.

He hurried to the opening in the roof and aimed his pistol through the hole, only to find a smiling Temple pointing his shotgun up and straight at him. Henry lay at his feet unconscious and from the looks of things had suffered his second head wound of the day.

Temple grinned. “Looks like you’re a bit too slow, sheriff. But this place seems secure enough for me to enjoy the rest of my life as I see fit. Rape and murder were always my two favorite things.”

Temple

“Son of a…” Dells started, but then Temple stumbled forward. Dells eyes opened wide in shock when he saw a blood splattered Becca, naked to the waist, wielding a three foot two-by-four.

With a yell, Dells leapt into the air and his boots came crashing down on the large hole in the roof. They broke through and he just kept going. He landed hard, but had kept his grip on his pistol.

Temple had been dazed, but turned toward him with the shotgun raised.

Templar

Dells didn’t waste a nano-second. He emptied his pistol into the evil freak. Even when he lay on his back unbreathing, Dells put his final shot between his eyes.

Becca had checked on her brother, but then raced into Dells arms and hugged him with a fierce abandon. Dells couldn’t help himself, he gave her a kiss for the first time. She didn’t seem to mind. Quite the opposite and their lips stayed locked until her brother started to stir.

Epilog

It wasn’t the easiest thing they had ever done, but the survivors cleared the rest of the undead out of their lonely desert town. The losses they suffered from both the maunders and the walking dead hit hard, but Dells had the silver lining of his new relationship with Becca.

The only lingering cloud was Henry. The boy had never been well balanced, but his multiple head wounds had caused him to take a turn for the worse. He also didn’t approve of Dells seeing his younger sister and said as much on many occasions. Dells figured it might become a problem, but as he lay next to Becca, he allowed himself to, if only briefly, relax and enjoy at least part of this sad excuse for a life he’d been dealt.

Thirty Pieces of Brain

June 12, 2015 at 12:12 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

Something about Henry’s blood drenched grin made Sheriff Dells shiver despite the heat. A horror lingered within the young man in some ways more unnerving than the zombies surrounding them and the marauders who did everything they could to ruin what little chance the people of San Miguel had at surviving the undead apocalypse.

He watched as Henry put a large zombie into a head lock. The walking corpse resisted, but was confused and allowed Henry to move it toward the front door of the building.

Insane Haeds

Again it amazed Dells how the zombies ignored Henry and treated him like one of their own. The cause remained a mystery. Becca had told him that Henry had developed a rare disease as a child. Whether this was the cause or something else, when Henry had been bitten for the first time, instead of dying, he had become immune to the attentions of the undead. This made him useful, but Dells also wondered if it had somehow affected the boy’s mind.

Someone had to have been collecting the undead and stuffing them into the abandoned buildings, but that was an issue for another time.

6d1c0-images

“Knock, knock,” Henry yelled from the front door.

“Fuck you,” was the reply from Temple as he blasted several rounds through the door. Most of them hit the zombie with meaty impacts, but Henry ran into a problem when one struck the zombie in the head. It fell forward and Henry had a hard time keeping it in front of him. The youth dove to the side, just before more bullets ripped through the wood.

Temple

Temple

“What the hell is going on?” Dells heard the other shooter yell.

“Some peckerwood is using the zombies for cover.” Temple shouted back.

“Don’t worry, I’ll get the shot of a bitch.”

“Yeah, we’ll see,” Dells whispered to himself while moving into position.

At the door

The growing numbers of zombies worried Ned. He had already lost one brother to their hunger and if what Temple said about being bit was true, it might end up being both. Part of him, a big part, just wanted to race of to the south, but Temple would say anything at any time. He might have yelled out he was bit just to throw their enemies off. He couldn’t take the risk that he might be okay and just leave him in there.

Lurching Dead

Lurching Dead

So he leaned around the building, trying to stay out of sight of his enemies both breathing and dead. The zombies were intent on breaking into the building that held his brother. They clustered around, already twenty strong. He had a hard time spotting the kid, but saw him crouching under a window.

This gave him pause. Wait, he thought. Why the hell aren’t all those zombies tearing him apart? This makes no sense I…He noticed just in time, but also too late that the sheriff was on the roof of the next building and taking a bead on him.

He managed to get one last curse past his lips before his head was blown into thirty pieces.

I’ve Been Bit!

May 29, 2015 at 7:30 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , , )

“I’ve been bit, I’ve been bit!” his brother yelled as he staggered toward Ned, already looking like the zombie he was doomed to become.

monster

Ned had concern for his brother, but also had to stay ahead of the thirty zombies on his tail. The thought of just putting a bullet through his brother’s head crossed his mind, but their youngest brother remained missing in action and he knew he might still need Jonny’s help to make it through what had quickly become a nightmare.

Zombie Bite

“Damn it, Jonny, come on. We made it through a fucking year of the plague. I don’t need to see us go down today.”

“I’m going down no matter what now,” he whined. “All because of these bunch of losers.”

“We’ll see, let’s circle around to Temple.” Even as he said it, he knew his brother wouldn’t be able to keep up, but he started moving anyway. Zombies had gathered in the streets below, but they were mostly to the north of them. Besides the group that had broken away to follow them up the hill, there weren’t too many between him and the building his youngest brother had dragged the girl into. He b-lined toward that building.

Zombie Lone

Jonny tried to keep up, but his multiple wounds slowed him. They were also cutting diagonally across the zombie’s path. Ned made it past them, but Jonny proved less fortunate.

His manic screams let Ned know that he would be meeting his fate long before the curse of the bite set in.

His brother screamed for him to help, but you couldn’t help a dead man.

Without so much as a look over his shoulder, Ned rushed toward Temple. He still might be able to save one of his brothers.

* * *

Sheriff Dells dodged to his left as more bullets ripped his way. Zombies groaned and he heard the meaty impacts as bullets hit their arms and chests. Dashing to the side of the building that run parallel to the one that held Becca and her abductor, he found himself removed from the area that could be fired upon, but not the accumulating zombies.

zombie splat

Despite the work he and his allies had done thinning the herd that had been lured into San Miguel, dozens still lumbered toward him. Between them and the presence of the gunman, he knew he’d be hard pressed to reach the front of the building that held Becca. So instead he put his boot on the doorknob of the structure and used it to help him climb up into the rafters that supported the former tax consultant’s front porch.

Beneath him zombies moaned with a dull desire as their filthy hands reached up toward him. Some of the taller ones ran their finger tips along his back searching for something to grab, but he didn’t give them a chance. He kept moving and climbing around the edge to the wooden porch and onto the consultant’s roof.

He paused a moment to take in the scene. To his north and west perhaps roughly two hundred of the original three hundred zombies remained. Most of them were just arriving below him, moving like a plague of hungry locusts looking for anything living to devour in their path. To the north east, his two deputies and what was probably Freddy and Fosters fired down on the mass of zombies doing as much damage as they could.

Zombie shot

He was just looking south and wondering if he could make the ten foot jump to the roof of the building that held Becca when he saw a figure running toward him just seconds before he raised his gun and fired.

Bullets whizzed by his head and Dells flung himself flat onto the roof. “Son of a gun barrel,” he cursed to himself and crawled toward the southern side of the roof. But the figure had already reached the south side of the next building before he could spot him again.

He heard the gunman shout to the man that had grabbed Becca. “You alright in there, Temple? Jonny’s gone. We gotta book.”

“No I ain’t alright, Ned, you bastard. I got bit. Screw this and screw these people. I’m going to go down fighting and fucking until my last breath.”

Dells grit his teeth and cursed, but then he caught something out of the corner of his eye. Henry no longer lay in the road. He had survived the shot to his head and was working his way around to the north side of the building that held his sister. He looked up at the sheriff and gave him a blood drenched grin.

Shotguns, Bullets, and Bites

May 22, 2015 at 12:14 pm (Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

Just because Henry stayed immune to the zombies’ attentions, didn’t mean they weren’t trying to tear Dells to pieces. Looking ahead, he saw Henry sprinting through the lumbering dead. “Yeah, don’t take a second to make sure I get through okay,” he said out loud, as he cut a line through the heads of four walking corpses that blocked his path.

Zombie Sickhouse

He tried to follow the youth while he raced toward where his sister was being held by one of the people who had just murdered Dells’ deputy, but the zombies grew thicker. Before long he questioned the wisdom of his plan to follow Henry.

He rifle went empty and he grabbed a magazine, but as he tried to jam it home, two large undead charged him and he was forced to use the rifle lengthwise to keep them at bay. Before he could stop them, they grabbed the rifle and tore it out of his hands.

With a curse, he drew the shotgun off his back and laid into them. He cleared a space, but it wouldn’t be enough. This could be it, but he stayed determined to go down fighting. Hands grasped and clawed. Teeth snapped inches from his face. He figured he was about done and that was when the head of the zombie to his right erupted with the jet of black blood. A second later the one to his left dropped and then two more. Looking back he saw four men on a nearby roof top. Two of them were his missing deputies.

zombie girl

“About time you guys showed up,” he growled under his breath, but he had too much to do to slow down. With their help, he created an opening to charge after Henry.

He saw Becca’s brother had almost made it to the house her capture had pulled her into and that was when a single shot rang out. Henry’s head jerked back and he went down hard.

Dells didn’t even have time to curse before more shots headed his way.

*         *         *

Hurrying up a steep hill while helping a wounded man that weighed nearly three hundred pounds wasn’t the easiest thing Ned had ever done. It didn’t help that his brother complained every step of the way either.

Looking back, he saw they moved faster than the zombies, if only barely. Upon reaching the crest of the cactus studded hill, Ned turned and fired another burst at the zombies closest to them. He dropped a few, but emptied his magazine.

Zombie Sword

“This is only bringing us further away from Temple,” he said. “We need to get back to him and stick together. Maybe we should try to circle around.”

“Are you nuts?” Jonny panted. “I’m hurt real bad. I can barely catch my breath.”

Looking around, Ned spied a long saguaro skeleton rib. Picking up the five foot staff, he handed it to his younger brother. “Use this and keep going. I’m going to thin the herd a bit. There is a lot of gunfire going on down there. If we can just waste the ones on our back, we might get clean.”

Not bothering to wait for a reply, Ned jammed a new magazine home and got to work picking his shots. Almost at once he knew this idea wasn’t going to work well. Easily forty zombies had followed them up the hill and he barely had that much ammunition left. He thought about the bullets left in Jonny’s destroyed gun and cursed.

He was just backing up when he heard Jonny cry out and then start cursing. “Son of a Goddamn bitch!”

Rushing to his brother’s side, he saw him beating an already incapacitated zombie with the splintered end of his staff. The zombie looked fresh, like it had only passed over an hour ago, but Ned didn’t register these facts in his conscious mind, for he saw that his brother had been bit on the upper part of his left arm.

He struggled as various emotions tore at his mind. All the while the remaining zombies behind him drew closer.

Is That Where She Is?

May 15, 2015 at 6:09 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

Ned grabbed a hold of his wounded brother trying to draw him back up the hill as the zombies Jonny had attracted lumbered their way.

“Oh damn,” Jonny said.

“Keep it down,” Ned snapped, “You don’t need to attract more than you already have.”

“Screw that, shot them. They’re getting too close.”

zombie 350

Ned remembered that the sheriff had destroyed Jonny’s gun. With a curse, he raised his rifle one handed and fired a burst into the closest ones. A few fell, but more than he shot turned at them at the sound of his gun. He cursed again and focused on just moving Jonny up the hill as more of the roaming geeks joined in the chase. He cast one last glance over his shoulder at the building that his youngest brother had dragged the girl into and wondered if Temple was already enjoying her or if the zombies had got him.

The building loomed silent and offered no answers. Letting out a third curse, he hurried up the hill as fast as his wounded brother could manage.

* * *

The only thing that amazed Dells more than seeing the man run down the zombie filled street is when Henry slowed to a stop when he saw the Sheriff leaning his gun out of the shattered post office window. Still, Dells had seen this before. Due to Henry’s immune system somehow allowing him to survive a zombie bite, he was now ignored by all the walking dead. The sheriff had seen him smash zombies in the face with eggs and literally kick their asses, but they never turned on him and just went ahead on their way.

“Sheriff, sheriff! Fosters said he saw some asshole grab my sister. Where is she?”

“I’m just trying to clear out a passage before I head over to that building over there.”

“Is that where she is?”

Dells was forced to pause as he shot down six zombies that were drawing in on his position.

“Is that where she is?” he screamed.

Insane Haeds

Insane

“Yeah the gray building…” Dells didn’t even finish his sentence before henry took off.

“Damn stupid kid’s going to get us all killed,” he lamented, but then, against his better judgement, climbed out the window and shot down zombies as he tried to keep up with the running youth.

Trouble Overload

May 9, 2015 at 1:04 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , )

Sheriff Dells dashed to the back of the dust covered post office as more taunt faced zombies tumbled in through the shattered windows. He reached the back sorting room and slammed the door shut behind him. He felt thankful that he had entered the building from this direction and even more thankful that the door had a lock. His fingers turned the bolt lock shut.

He wished this could have given him a moment, but he didn’t have as much as a free second. Becca had been pulled into a zombie filled building by one of the men that had just murdered Dells’ best friend and it was a deadly gamble which of them might hurt Becca first.

Temple

Temple

He had made it to the back window just as the first bang sounded on the locked door. Looking out the window, he could see the building the marauder had pulled Becca into, but what caused his face to tense were the zombies that had already started to spread across the road which separated them.

ZOmbies behind us

Drawing the shotgun off his back, he leaned it against the wall and raised his rifle. He was just about to start firing when a lone figure could be seen sprinting through the zombies and heading his way.

*         *         *

Ned felt like a zombie had just torn him in half and he remained uncertain. One of his younger brothers had just been shot and the other had been pulled into a building filled with geeks.

Zombie Horde

Zombie Horde

Since Jonny was only a few yards back, he figured he should check on him first. Running back the way he came, he found Jonny laying on his side groaning while a pool of red spread over his right shoulder.

“How are you doing, big guy?” he said as he crouched lower.

“First that bastard shot my rifle and now he’s damn near killed me.”

Ned talked while he draped Jonny’s left arm across his shoulders. “Come on, we gotta move. Temple’s in trouble and them geeks are going to be all over this place. He focused on his brother’s massive bulk and strained with the act of trying to lift him onto his feet.

Jonny let out a loud cry of pain as Jonny got his feet under him.

Ned’s head had been lowered, but when he raised it, his eyes grew wide with horror. Jonny’s cry had caused about two dozen zombies to gaze their way A moment later they started stumbling up the hill in their direction.

Is There a Safe Place?

May 1, 2015 at 4:16 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

Ned watched his youngest brother jog down the step hill. He bounced boulder to boulder and appeared oblivious to the shots being fired or the hundreds of zombies pouring into town. Their plague spread slowly like an overturned barrel of black mud leaking through the streets.

As Ned watched, the girl that Temple had his eye on turned and saw him rushing toward her. She paused uncertain and that was all it took.

Temple

Temple

“Help me,” Temple shouted. “I’ve been hounded by walkers for days. I had no idea people still lived here.” He drew in closer. “Is there a safe place…” His brother didn’t even bother finishing his sentence. Instead he cold cocked the girl in the jaw so hard that she lost consciousness.

Becca With Gun

Jonny started to chuckle until bullet shattered the window next to Temple’s face.

Temple gazed in the direction of the gunshots for a moment before crouching over and pulling the girl upright before his body. He walked backward for a moment and then kicked at the door to what appeared to be a tax company. It took him a few tries, but the door burst inward.

They Are Coming to Get You Emily

He had just started to drag her inside the buildings when grey arms reached out, and almost like they were aiding him, pulled both Temple and the girl through the doorway. Ned had barely been able to absorb what he’d just seen, when he heard Jonny cry out. Ned turned just in time to see his brother spin in a half circle and then drop to the ground.

* * *

The only thing worse than seeing the woman that you secretly love being dragged into a building by a half-mad marauder, would be finding out that the building is also filled with undead.

Why are these buildings filled with zombies when I personally saw to it that the entire town was cleared? Sheriff Dells thought, but when he saw two other men racing downhill toward the building that held Becca, he opened fire on them. He might have dropped the biggest one, but then found himself with new problems.

The zombies had arrived outside of the post office he had held up in. The first one on the scene grabbed the barrel of his rifle and it was all Dells could do to keep it from being pulled out of his hands. He drew back into the building, but cursed when the zombies pushed through the shattered glass and followed him.

Closing the circle

Closing the circle

More came in after the first ones and he was forced to retreat, but he barely noticed his own safety for it remained Becca’s fate that concerned him the most. As more shots rang out, Dells turned his back on the stumbling zombies and raced toward the back of the post office.

Fresh Blood

April 24, 2015 at 4:30 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

Sheriff Dells remained safe from the snipers as long as he kept the post office between him and the cactus studded hill to the west, but how long could he stay there with a hundred zombies heading his way. Already some stumbled straight toward him. He wondered why, since he’d hidden around a corner, but then he remembered his dead friend. His fresh blood will be drawing them this way, he thought to himself.

Three Zombies

On the other side of San Miguel’s small downtown, he could still hear the shots Henry and Freddy fired into the three hundred undead that had wondered into his remote town.

Not wasting another second, he smashed the butt of his shotgun through one of the back windows of the post office. It didn’t take him long to crawl inside. He knew the layout well enough to move to the front of the building. He passed through dust covered packages that would never me delivered. A stench of decay hung in the air while he secured the door into the back rooms.

Blooded but Unbowed

Blooded but Unbowed

Something moved behind him. His head jerked back to see three zombies shuffling his way. The sight should have been impossible. He had cleared his city months ago. Every building that didn’t hold people had been cleared of undead and then locked up. Worse still, he knew all of the zombies. Each of them, in life, had been citizens in his town. He had counted them among the dead long ago even though their bodies had never been recovered.

How long have they been locked in here? He wondered, but then knew he had to act or be joining them in their endless pacing—a path leading nowhere.

He smashed what used to be Marcy DeLuca in the center of her forehead with the butt of the shotgun. She stumbled back into Chris French, the former owner of the gas station. Sue Davenport, a friend of his ex-wife’s, lunged at him like a servant of death seeking revenge for every imagined wrong she’d heard about him.

Putting her down wasn’t the hardest thing he’d ever had to do.

He kept pushing the other two off their feet until he had time to draw his hunting knife. He kicked Chris in the chest and then tackled Marcy to the floor. She took a knife to the eye and he hadn’t noticed how grating her moaning had been until it stopped. But he had a hard time drawing the blade. He hadn’t removed it before Chris began clawing at his back.

00000

Kicking out with one leg, he pushed the man back. He grabbed a wooden box off the counter and smashed it over Chris’s head. It wasn’t enough. The zombie grabbed at him. His left hand swung the shotgun up and broke one of Chris’s fingers. Grabbing the weapon with both hands, he pushed it away.

Chris was knocked off balance for just a second and that was all it took for Dells to use the gun to bash him in the face. It took two more hits, but finally Chris stopped moving.

Happy that he’d been able to take out the three zombies, without firing a shot, Dells headed toward the front windows. He spotted the men on the hill taking shots at what was probably Henry’s ride.

Setting down his shotgun, he got his rifle ready. After taking aim, he fired a single shot. He couldn’t be sure how successful his shot had been, but the firing from the hill ceased.

* * *

Man Mountain cried out when his rifle exploded. Without thinking, he and his brothers dropped to the ground.

“Son of a bitch,” Jonny said. “That fucker nearly blew off my finger.”

“Could have been worse,” Ned said, while he adjusted his position in the hopes of seeing the shooter.

“I guess it could have been my head,” Jonny complained, “But my rifle’s fucked.”

Ripper

Temple spoke up. “Hell, we all know you use your hands more than your head. Although neither are too useful.”

Jonny started to whine, but Temple cut him off. “Hold it. I think I see that little hot number down there. Looks like she’s trying to stir up the town against us. I’m going to get to her before those dead heads do.”

“What about the shooter and them zombies?” Ned asked.

“Screw them both. Let them take each other out. I’m going for the girl, you can come with me and try to grab yourself a few warmies before this town goes to hell or you can hang out up here and then fuck cold pussy all night.”

Temple

Temple

The two other men shared a look and then followed their younger brother into the besieged town.

The Apocalypse Was a Good Thing

April 17, 2015 at 4:00 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

Dells watched in horror as his deputy’s life bleed out of the bullet wound through his skull. For a long moment he stared at his ally, his friend, but then the shooting drew him out of his daze.

Zombie Horde

Henry and Freddy were taking fire. He could only hope they fared better than he and Cale. Grabbing a rifle he tossed in over his shoulder, while letting a shotgun fill his hands. He was about to leave his ride when he saw the first zombies appearing on the other side of the post office parking lot. “Hell, that’s all I need. Snipers and zombies. Snipers, zombies, and death.”

6d1c0-images

(An Hour Earlier)

Ned Conway sat on a rock situated on the top of a hill overlooking San Miguel. He and his brothers had been hitting isolated desert towns since the beginning of the zombie apocalypse.

Raiding such towns had a lot of upsides. First off, low populations meant less biters to deal with. Also the folks in the boonies tended to stock up on non-perishable food and firearms more than the average person living in the city. Sure they had run into some well armed people holding out, but they usually just let them be and moved on. They weren’t angels by any means and he and his brothers had taken liberties with far more than stores of food.

Mace

Sometimes Ned marveled over how quickly the façade of civilization had slipped away from him and his brothers. Temple in particular had developed a mean streak that would have landed in in jail at best during normal times. Out here, it was a survival mechanism. Jonny, who was often called Man-Mountain, due to his side, had a softer spot for the ladies and would beg his brothers to allow him to take one along with them. Temple would have none of it and after he slit the throat of a woman before his older brother’s eyes, Jonny had stopped asking.

Dark Hair

But they had never found a town where so many people had survived. It had seemed like too many to take on, but then Temple saw some of the women down there and he wanted them. The town also had working vehicles, guns and probably food. It seemed like a place too good to pass up, but the brothers had muddled over how they could take over the town.

When screams and gunfire had broken out, they had almost made their move, but then the sheriff had returned.

They were about to go for it, when they saw a small horde traveling down I-87. Ned and his brothers had made sure they were lured into the town. They didn’t need everyone alive, just a few women would do. Have a little fun, get a little gear, and then move on. Perhaps they might stay this time, but that never seemed to happen.

Ned and Jonny would often want to linger, but Temple could never stay in one place to long. Despite being the oldest brother, Ned had a hard time controlling Temple and he worried over his dark nature on sleepless nights. In the end it proved easier to let his brother have his way.

The brothers readied their rifles. “Once those rotters hit the edge of town, we start shooting at anything with a pulse,” Ned said.

Survivors

“Except for that girl we saw killing some zombies down there. She looks like a fighter and fighters last longer. I want her.”

Neither brother said anything and Jonny looked as the desert rocks beneath his feet. “Fine,” Ned said to fill the vacuum. “It’s those sheriffs that worry me anyway. Once they are down, I think we can handle a few girls.”

Temple laughed. “And handle them is just what I’m going to do.” He laughed again and this time his brothers joined in. In a few hours the town would be theirs to take their time with and do whatever they liked. For them, the apocalypse was a good thing. Overall their lives had never been better and it sure beat working at Jiffy Lobe, like he had for three years.

As the sheriff’s big Suburban sped toward the rotters, Ned took aim and fired.

Who the Hell…

April 10, 2015 at 12:41 pm (Apocalypse, Eternal Aftermath, Horror, Zombie) (, , , , , )

The five men and one woman looked at the stumbling group of undead heading toward their town in silence as they each speculated on how much this invasion would put the remaining population of San Miguel in danger.

Zombie Masses

Sheriff David Dells was the first to speak. “Alright, we need to get moving and I want us to work in teams. Fosters, you and Becca need to run and alert as many people as you can. Send the fighters to us and tell everyone else to get inside and lock their doors.”

Becca started to protest, so he hurried on. “Freddy, you’re armed, right? I want you and Henry to grab a working vehicle and start cutting down their numbers. Don’t get too close and don’t take any risks, but we need to start thinning them out as quickly as possible.”

“Yes sir,” Freddy said, but as he turned to jog off, he called over his shoulder. “And keep your eyes out. Remember there was already an outbreak here today. Other problems could be lurking.”

“So what the hell are we doing?” Cale asked.

“We are heading back to the station to grab some serious fire power and my ride.

Cale actually smiled. “Ahhh, the Suburban from hell, good idea.”

Having said his piece, Dells lead the way with a fast jog. Along the way a woman’s long scream disturbed the desert stillness. It was a brutal cry and the type they heard many times before.

Cale’s boots kicked up sand as he came to a halt. “Sounds like Freddy was right. The outbreak from before hasn’t be contained.”

“Keep going,” Dells ordered. “Things will be just one big outbreak if we don’t stop that horde before it reaches the town.” The sun blazed overhead and his body’s sweat dried almost before it could form as they took up the jog again.

Dells had two other deputies besides Cale and it surprised them that neither was at the station. It didn’t make sense. San Miguel wasn’t that big. They should have been on the streets already after the gunfire.

Cale stated the obvious. “Were the hell is everybody?”

“Doesn’t make sense, but we can’t worry over it now. Maybe they saw that group heading into town and we’ll find them helping Freddy.” Then, without another wasted word, Dells headed for the gun racks. He passed Cale four rifles and grabbed up two shotguns and a duffle bag full of ammunition.

Even after a year of plague, San Miguel still had a healthy amount of rounds. Unlike other areas, Dells hadn’t let the undead gain a strong hold in his little isolated town. Add to that the gun fever than many Arizonians had and he figured he probably had more rounds available than most cities did these days.

Zombie rifle

Once they had loaded up, the pair scanned the alley. Seeing nothing, they ran to Dells huge Suburban. Dells drove as they raced toward the conflict. The size of the swarm heading they way looked worse than his first guess. Almost three hundred of the walking dead were just reaching the outlying buildings of his town. Henry and Freddy were doing there best to drop the zombies, but they had barely made a dent.

“Should we get on a roof or something?” Cale asked.

“No, I think we should stay mobile. We will have a better chance to-”

His words were cut short when a bullet passed through the windshield of his ride.

“” he started, but then more shots came their way. He raced behind the post office, which covered him from the shippers. “Who could be shooting at us…?” Dells started, but then his voice trailed off for a second time as Cale’s body went into convulsions. He looked on in horror as he saw his friend slump against the truck’s door as blood welled up from a head wound.
